It still feels like a dream, something too good to be true, and Steve doesn't deserve it anymore than he deserves to walk his way across the Moira to her room. But he's stubborn enough to disregard it for just another glimpse of the face and voice weighing on his heart, and he lingers just outside her door for almost too long before he knocks. The deck doors are automatic, which means it would have probably let him inside if someone was in there, but patience will reward him soon enough. He can stand there and look around as if he doesn't know what this area of the ship looks like. He can give her that wayward smile of his when she finally answers, and this time, it's not bleeding with regret or heartache or countless other things sitting on the tip of his tongue in confession. ]
[Peggy's day had been a whirlwind, not only suddenly finding herself torn from her life and being trapped on a spaceship, but finding out half of what she knew was a lie. She had given up, moved on from one of the most important people in the world to her, only to find out she had left him, abandoned him to seventy years under the ice. She had wanted to make the best of it, because Steve was here and that was something she had wanted to the very core of her being. But it was a lot to process. While she embraced every moment with him, she also needed a chance to think and understand, so she decided to explore, alone, and to take her time in meeting other people on the ship and gather information. But even with ability to take things in stride, it was all just overwhelming.
After getting lost about half a dozen times, she finally found the room she was assigned, and while she was glad to finally have a moment to herself, it also gave her time to really think about the situation at hand. It was just so much. It was all so strange and unbelievable, yet here she was, having dozens of people tell her the same story. Them, she was less inclined to believe, but even Steve sang the same tune. She didn't know what to think.
And then there was a knock on her door.
She didn't move right away, her mind wandering and almost not processing it immediately, but she finally got up from her bed, moving to answer it. She didn't know who it would be -- maybe her roommate, or maybe even one of the many people she had met that day, but she honestly hoped it would be her tall and handsome super soldier.
Her heart skipped a beat when she opened the door to see him, the smile on her face so genuine as she made sure to take in every part of him, determined to memorize these precious moments she had with him again. She didn't know how long this would last, how long she would have with him again, so every second mattered.]
[ He feels as he did that very first time he'd ever seen her: completely awestruck.
It's an impossible feeling to hide so quickly, how real she is and reachable. There had been those instances watching her on those films in the Smithsonian and wishing to reach through to sit in the moment with her, to take her hand in his and feel the warmth of her skin. Soothe the quiver in her words, how intimate the sound of his name sounded in that velvet voice, and even now, he can't quite believe the circumstances of their reunion, how she had felt wrapped in his arms. The scent of her perfume had lingered in his clothes, and Steve had very nearly crushed the compass with her picture in it the second they'd parted ways and he'd had time to reflect on it in his own room. He hadn't wanted to, but the need for space had been great, a necessity. Processing it took a while, though he'd found his way back to her like he should have all those years ago.
He's almost relieved, the weight a bit lighter—though immovable. Steve has carried it so long, he doubts it will ever truly disappear. Still, he smiles, that gentle flash of something more he's always given her and no one else. ]
Hi. [ Not everything has changed about him, shifting his weight awkwardly like he's completely forgotten why he'd decided to see her. He recovers quick enough, glancing from her face to the room over her shoulder. ] Are you settling in okay? I know it's a lot to get used to.
[ The culture shock of the future had been difficult, but showing up on a ship in the middle of space? He'll do anything he can to help her through it. ]
[It warms her heart to see that smile -- a glimpse of the Steve Rogers she knew so well. This Steve was him, no doubt, but the baggage he carried..It hurt her heart to see the pain he had been through. He had told her some of what had happen all those years later, but not everything. Not that she would expect him to immediately. Just like she hadn't share everything, either.
This was going to be a process for both of them. Neither was the same, years had passed. But she was glad some things never changed, and that was evident by the way he still was so awkward around her.]
Yes, I am-- thank you. [She glances back at the room in question, but then gestures out to the hall.] I would invite you in, but my roommate seems to have a liking for cigarettes, alcohol, and not picking up after himself.
[aka it's a mess and stinks. But it's exactly like New York, so she basically feels right at home.]
[ Everything will take time, too much of it probably, but they are already steps ahead of where they might have been if he hadn't crashed into the ocean. Steve still owes her a dance, and he'll give it to her once things aren't so chaotic, once he finds the courage to actually ask her. But for now, this is okay too. His smile settles into a more genuine and happier look as she speaks. It's not entirely lifted of the weight he carries, but it's easier to be with her like this.
Steve's expression shifts into something a bit more humorous at the mention of her roommate. He's glad Niko isn't at all like that. ]
You'll have to meet mine. I think you'd like him. [ But he lifts a shoulder, stepping back into the hall. ] Do you wanna walk for a while? There's plenty of places to go. [ And honestly, he doesn't know how comfortable he would be in that private space that's supposed to be hers. At least, not until they work things out more, and he explains some things to her. ]
[She won't let him forget about that dance he owes her, don't worry. But now doesn't seem like the right time to bring it up. Maybe once she settles in and gets used to...well, everything. She doesn't like feeling so overwhelmed as she does, but at least she has the best support anyone could ask for.]
Well, if he meets your standards, I suppose he couldn't be all bad. You'll have to introduce us. [It's amazing how easily she slips right back into a gentle tease with him. She had always felt comfortable and easy around him. She's still a little withheld, just given the nature of everything, but it's a work in progress.]
That sounds lovely, actually. It will be nice to tour it with someone that actually knows where they're going. [She saw a lot of the ship already, sure, but she got so turned around. Unfortunately without a full comprehension of working the MID, she couldn't pull up the map to learn her way around.]
[ At least, that's what he's come to believe. Then again, he's also ran laps around every open area of the ship in the last three months he's been there, so it's probably a little unfair to give that impression when she's only just gotten there. It's something he honestly can't believe, still. Looking at her, listening to her, being able to reach out and touch her... Steve curls his fingers and squeezes once to resist the urge, and his smile is soft, taking another step back to invite her out into the hall with him.
He lifts his wrist to show the band around it and then carefully offers his hand to her. Maybe it's strange to think he could hold onto her after all this time, but he would try. ] I can show you how that works too - if you want. It helps if you get lost. [ Which is bound to happen sooner or later, and Steve wants to give her every advantage to protect herself when he couldn't be there to save her. ]
That's easy for you to say, Captain. [He does have three months on her, not to mention a top-notch memory. She's good, but even she can't compete with that. Her lips curl as she says his title, before she steps out into the hall and closes the door behind her.
And then he offers his hand. Her heart skips a beat as she takes it without question, because she wants to hold onto him just as much as he to her.]
You have no idea how much I would love that. I've tried, obviously, but this is more complicated than anything Howard's made. [and she's really glad he offered, too. It saved her from having to put aside her pride and ask him herself.]
I appreciate the gesture, but I've been shown around already. [Between her own exploits and then Steve showing her around, she's pretty sure she's been just about everywhere allowed.]
Unless you insist. I don't mind; and I have no qualms about aliens, I assure you. [Just. Sliding that in there. Just in case she thought Peggy was refusing on that account.]
Hey, as long as you got the gist of the place? That's all that matters to me. Hell, I stay in Med Bay most of the time myself.
And good. I've run into a few people that have. Sort of makes it hard to make a good first impression.
[But, to be honest? Doc Yewll doesn't give half a Hellbug's ass about first impressions. Either people like her or they don't. It's all the same to her as long as she can do her job.]
I'm starting to, at the very least. [it was a work in progress, anyway.] Oh, do you work there?
Somehow that doesn't surprise me. People always tend to fear what they don't understand or see as different. [She just spent the last several years in a war filled with so much hate. But just because it happened didn't mean it was right.] I'm sorry you've had to encounter small-minded people here.
[There really was no escape from them, was there? While she was still trying to wrap her mind around aliens, she saw no reason to think of them as anything different. She had no reason to. They were trapped in this mess all the same as anyone from Earth.]
Hey, no worries here. There are plenty of bigots in the Votan races, too. A girl grows a thick skin after a while, and it's easier when you can grow that thick skin back pretty quick.
[The bigots she'd met onboard were few and far between, and mostly it just annoyed her.]
Yes, I agree. [She certainly knows a thing or two about needing thick skin. Maybe it wasn't bigots as Meh was speaking of, but she spent far too much time around sexist men that refused to let her skills and talents see the light of day.] Still, it's a shame people refuse to be half-way decent, even surrounded by all of space and time.
I found that when presented with the vast expanse of space and time people just like to air everything out. Which might be a little cynical but they didn't hire me for my charming personality.
And by hire I mean yank me off the face of the planet but you know. "Hire".
I try to see the best in people. But I suppose everyone reacts to something like this differently. [It would be impossible to predict how everyone reacted in a situation like this, but she still hated to think from all the times and places people were from, many were still full of hatred and spite.]
Luckily there haven't been too many. We got a good mix of human and non-human here, and even then some people that are human come in different types of human.
That is fortunate. If everyone keeps an open mind, I'm sure we can all learn a lot from those around us here.
[That was her intention, anyway. There was so much about this place that was nothing like her home. Aliens, special humans, technology, space-- she wanted to take in as much as she could while she had the chance.]
